American in northern Norwegian or maybe visa versa. Elegant, modern jazz fusion delivered by a quartet with roots in Tromsø and Harstad. Music from Lake Michigan and Prestvannet.
The music of the Glesnes/Medby Quintet is original material and is both melodious and groove laden jazz which takes its inspiration from European and US influences. In this concert the quintet will present music from the album ”Snow In June” and there may well be a few surprises and glimpses of a whole new repertoire.
Fred Glesnes and Stein Medby are two composers and musicians from Tromsø who have chosen to remain at home in the north. This followed an intense period of writing during the Northern Jazz Expo at Barentsjazz in 2013. The feedback was overwhelming and is set to continue. It was all arranged by the Nordnorsk jazzsenter in order to present musicians and freshly composed music for the national and international press and festivals.
Glesnes/Medby joined up with Åsmund W. Eriksson, Ole Morten Indigo Lekang and Eirik Fjelde (tangenter) together with whom they formed the quintet in 2013. Even though the band is quite new it consists of musicians who have been very active in this part of Norway. The members have a series of releases behind them with The band called Oh!, Tromsø Storband, Badger, Glesnes/Ytreberg Quartet and Adjagas to name just a few.
In 2015 the quintet released their first album called ”Snow In June” and won glowing reviews from both public and press. The same year the Nordnorsk jazzsenter arranged a tour to promote the new album. The tour closed with a concert at the National Jazzscene, Victoria. On the tour they brought along the legendary and multiple Grammy award winner Randy Brecker.
