In this performance Mari Boine goes back to her roots. She sings some of her earliest songs and we hear music written for a film about the renowned Kautokeino uprising. During the breaks between songs the historian Brita Pollan will relate stories and anecdotes illustrating the endemic oppression of the Samí people by missionaries and priests.
The stories which Brita Pollan will recite give us a window into the spiritual backdrop that fuels so many of Mari Boine´s powerful songs. An uncompromising and deeply moving journey into Samí culture and history.
The performance went on national tour (Rikskonsertene) in 2009 but has never been presented in Harstad. We are delighted that we were able to include this powerful production in our focus upon Samí art and music.
Mari Boine is one of our time´s Samí icons and one of Norway´s most important artists. A World Music star loved for recreating joik and revolutionising Samí music, through blending elements from jazz, rock og traditional repertoire. Boine has won several Spellemann prizes and Nordisk Råd´s music prize in 2003.
She will be joined on stage by Festival Profile Artist Georg Buljo and the percussionist Gunnar Augland.
