Using 12 large portrait photographs and a video installation comprising 6 TV screens, the renowned photo artist Newsha Tavakolian reveals how Iranian women are marginalised in relation to the public realm, including the ban on female singers performing in public.
The ban against singing in Iran is illustrated through videos of women singing, but without sound. They are also portrayed as artists with stage styling and imaginary CD covers. These materialise the dream the women have of becoming artists in their home country. The self-taught photographer, Newsha, began her career as a professional press photographer in Teheran at the young age of 16 - first in "Zan", a women's daily, and later for nine different pro-reform daily newspapers, all of which have been officially banned. Her works have been published and spread via international periodicals and newspapers such as Time Magazine, Newsweek, Stern, Le Figaro, New York Times Magazine, Der Spiegel and National Geographic. Newsha is particularly well known for her focus on themes involving women.
